Decimals Surround Us

Greetings Math Class

Mrs Lynch is redoing the floors in the bedrooms of her house. She has one bedroom that is 9.5 ft by 10.4 ft. She also has 3 bedrooms that are 8.4 ft by 9.35 ft. The amount of flooring is determined by finding the area of all four rooms. Write an equation to show the problem that needs to be solved, use a variable that helps tell the story. Explain your variable. How much flooring does she need?

(9.5 * 10.4) + 3(8.4 * 9.35) = s
s = square feet of flooring

(9.5 * 10.4) + 3(8.4 * 9.35) = s
     98.8       +  3   (78.54)    = s
     98.8       +      235.62     = s
              334.42                  = s
             334.42 sq. ft

Your turn. Use the comment box to write your own word problem similar to the one above. Make sure to ask the same questions and include the answers using the same format. Type this ahead of time in a document. notes, etc. Then copy and paste it into the comment box.

Special notes:
  • * means to multiply
  • parenthesis next to a number means to multiply
    3(4) = 3*4=12
    or 3(9-4) = 3*5=15
  • Do not forget the order of operations

  1. Three houses on my street compete to see who has the longest light that they used to decorate they’re entire house they only use one strand, the griffins lights are 19.87 feet long, the Peterson’s lights are 6.2 times as long, the Browns lights are 3.4 times as much than the Peterson’s. How many feet of lights did the three houses use in total??

    The answer is: (19.87 * 6.2) + (123.194 * 3.4) = F F=feet of lights the product is 425.6154 F= 425.6154

    Emma is ordering 3 pairs of glasses. One pair of glasses is 2.3 in by 1.2 in. The 2 other pairs are 2.5 in by 1.4 in. What is the total amount of inches for all of the pairs? Explain your variable.6.26 inches because I did (2.3×1.2)+(2.5×1.4)×2=I. I did the variable I because that stands for Inches.

    (6.7 * 4.2) + 4(5.6 * 8.3) = s
    s= square feet of the gardens

    (6.7 * 4.2) + 4(5.6 * 8.3) = s

    Jules has 7 books. 3 books are 2.5 square inches by 7.3 square inches. The other 4 books are 3.9 square inches by 8.2 square inches. What is the area of the all the books? Write an equation to show how to solve the problem. Use a variable that will make sense with the story.
    Answer:
    3 x (2.5 x 7.3) + 4 x (3.9 x 8.2) = S
    3 x(2.5 x 7.3) = 54.75
    4 x (3.9 x 8.2) =127.92
    127.92 + 54.75 = 182.67 Square Inches

  19. Keshob made four fences, one fence was 9.4 by 3.7, the other fences were 5.4 by 6.3 how much area is in all of the fences use a variable for the the answer. The answer is 136.84

    (9.4 x 3.7 = (34.78 = a)

    a = area of fence

    (5.4 x 6.3 = (34.02 = a)

    (34.02 x 3 = (102.06 = a)

    102.06 or a is the area of the other three fences

    34.78 or a is the area of the first fence

    So do 102.06 + 34.78 = a

  24. Vincent has 179 marbles and wants to split them evenly into 8 boxes. About how many marbles will be in each box? You can round 179 to 170 and 8 to 10. The real answer would be 179 divided by 8 = 22 R3.
    It is a remainder 3 because 3 of the left over marbles are not needed.
