Formulas, Formulas, Formulas

Formulas are

Fancy

As we finished traditional division last week and explored spreadsheets, it seems time to consider the wide world of formulas. To calculate grades individually, we divided the points earned by the points possible. To calculate the average, we added up all of the scores and divided by the amount of tests. Where might you find other data to break down? Tell me a story with real data. Show me your formula to solve. You must have an even amount of data. Your question must end like this: What is the mean, median, mode and range? Is there an outlier? What is it? When calculating the mean and median, be sure to write out the formula equation.

I entered Mrs. Lynch's math class at the beginning of the year. So far we have had 6 math tests. I received these percentage grades. 95, 89, 72, 80, 65 and 91. What is the mean, median, mode and range? Is there an outlier? What is it? When calculating the mean and median, be sure to write out the formula equation.

Answer

Mean: 82%

95+89+72+80+65+91 = 82
               6

Or

(95+89+72+80+65+91)/6 = 82

Median: 84.5%

80+89 = 84.5
    2

Or

(80+89)/2 = 84.5

Mode: No data is repeated so there is no mode.

Range: 95-65=30

Outlier: 65 could be an outlier, but there isn't a great deal of data. It is the furthest removed from the rest of the data. And it is the only grade that is a D.

  1. Caillou is running for school secretary. He had to get votes from grades k to 5. Each grade had 100 kids. He received the votes 82, 34, 38, 29, 25, and 26. What is the mean, median, mode and range? Is there an outlier? What is it? When calculating the mean and median, be sure to write out the formula equation.

    answer:

Mean: 39% of the entire school
    (82+34+38+29+25+26)/6=39

    Median:31.5
    (29+34)/2=31.5

Mode: No data is repeated so there is no mode.

    Range: 82-25=57

Outlier: 82 is the outlier because it is the furthest removed from the rest of the data. That grade wanted Caillou as school secretary the most.

  3. Julia is collecting money from 6 schools. She received 97, 68, 54, 49, 32, and 28 from the schools. What is the mean, median, and range? If there is a outlier what is it?

    Answer:

    Mean:53% of the schools
    (97+68+54+49+32+28)/6=53

    Median: 51.5
    (54+49)/2=51.5

Mode: There is no mode because none of the data is repeated.

    Range:69
    (97-28=69)

Outlier: 97 because it is the furthest from the rest of the data.

  5. Dillan has taken 8 ELA tests this year. The scores are 91%, 93%, 89%, 87%, 88%, 100%, 99%, and 97%. What is the mean, median, mode and range? Is there an outlier? What is it? When calculating the mean and median, be sure to write out the formula equation.

    Mean: 93%

    91+93+89+87+88+100+99+97= 93%
    8

    Median: 92

    93+91= 92%

Mode: N/a (No data is repeated so there is no mode.)

    Range: 100-87=13

    Outlier: 87 and 100

  7. Emma S. (A.K.A. #1)

Emma has taken six test so far on the test she got 81% 95% 62% 85% 76% and 92% is there a mean median mode and range? What is it?

    Mean: 81.5 because 81+95+62+85+76+92 = 491 and 491÷6 = 81 .5

    Median: 83 because 85+81 = 166 and 166÷2 = 83

    Mode: there is no mode

Range: the range is 33 because 95 minus 62 equals 33

Outlier: 62 is the outlier because 62 is the greatest difference away from any other numbers

  8. Mr. Pickles is trying to get into the NBA All Star game in six days. Each day, he got 16, 19, 23, 49, 53, and 74 votes. Try to find the mean, median, mode, range, and outlier if there is one.

    Answer

    Mean: 39% because (16+19+23+49+53+74)/6=39.

    Median: 36 because (23+49)/2=36.

Mode: There is no mode because there are no repeated numbers.

    Range: 74-16=58.

Outlier: 74 because it is the farthest away from the rest of the numbers.

Mode: No data is repeated so there is no mode.

    Range: 9.4-8.7=.7

Outlier: 8.7 could be an outlier, but it is only 4 tenths from 9.1.
