Explain the Remainder

On Monday this week, we did a word problem that was solved using division and resulted in a remainder. The original problem was:

Suppose you have 134 stamps in your collection.  You want to display them on 5 pages of an album with about the same number of stamps on each page.  About how many stamps should go on each page?

To solve, first we had to estimate. We saw many different estimates. 150/5, 135/5 and even 130/5. Any of these estimates are reasonable. To check our work we did the real division which resulted in 26 r 4. This meant that 4 of the 5 pages would have 27 stamps and one page would have 26 stamps.

This week, please write your own word problem that
  • uses division to solve
  • requires estimation
  • requires the actual answer
  • results in a remainder
  • requires an explanation of that remainder
Make sure you write the problem and do all the work!

    236/5=47R1

  11. Lily bought 123 bouncy balls. She wants to divide them evenly between her 5 friends. About how many bouncy balls will each friend get? What is the actual answer? Explain the remainder.

    Answer: 123 / 5 = 24 bouncy balls with 3 remaining
Since there is a remainder, Lily can either keep the 3 balls, or have three friends have 25 balls, while the other two have 24 balls.
    Round 123 to 150. 150 / 5 = About 30 bouncy balls

  13. Brendan has 148 Baseball cards and would like to split them evenly to each of his 3 brothers. How many cards do each of them get?
    answer
First you round up to get 150 cards then divide by three to get about 50 cards each, this is an over estimate.

148 divided by three is 49 R1 so the three of the brothers get 49 cards each and the last one is kept for Brendan Because all the brothers must have the same amount.

  14. Danny has a team that picked 254 apples they gave the apples to 4 company's how many many apples did each company get if the apples were divided evenly.

firs 254 rounds to 250 then 250 divided by 4 is 62 R2 this is also an under estimate because I rounded down to 250.

the real answer to this problem is 63 R2 and the two left over gets brought home to Danny to give to him and his kid Charlie.

    About 48 because 236 rounds to 240 and 240/5=48
The real answer is 47R1 because 236/5=47R1
Since there is a remainder, one shelf will have 48 while the other 4 will have 47 cookies
