### Explain the Remainder

On Monday this week, we did a word problem that was solved using division and resulted in a remainder. The original problem was:

Suppose you have 134 stamps in your collection.  You want to display them on 5 pages of an album with about the same number of stamps on each page.  About how many stamps should go on each page? To solve, first we had to estimate. We saw many different estimates. 150/5, 135/5 and even 130/5. Any of these estimates are reasonable. To check our work we did the real division which resulted in 26 r 4. This meant that 4 of the 5 pages would have 27 stamps and one page would have 26 stamps.

• uses division to solve
• requires estimation
• results in a remainder
• requires an explanation of that remainder
Make sure you write the problem and do all the work!

57 divided by 2 equals 28 r 1 and 28r1 is closest to 30 so #1 answer is 28 people and #2 answer is about 30 people.

6. I have 349 balls.I have 5 boxes to put the balls equalliy in the boxes. How much balls go in each box.

349/5=69r4
350/5=70
because it is a remainder i will have to do in 4 boxes 70 balls and in 1 box 69 balls

7. At a grocery store they have 236 cookies and want to place them on 5 shelves. How many cookies go in each box? About how many go in each box?

236/5=47R1
230/5=46
Since there is a remainder, one shelf would have 48 cookies and the other 4 would have 47.

8. At cheerleading practice, there is 143 girls on the team, the coaches want to put the girls in row of 5.ABOUT how many girls are in each row?

143 rounds to 150 and 150 divided by 5=30

9. I have 379 pencils my pencil cases can fit 7 pencils about how many cases do I need?

379/7=54 R1
379 rounds to 350
350/7=50

10. I have 349 balls. I have 5 boxes. I want to put same amount of balls in each box. How many balls are in each box.About how much balls will go in each box?

349/5=69r4 69 balls and 4 remaining
because there is a remainder 4 boxes will have 70 balls and 1 box will have 69 balss

11. Lily bought 123 bouncy balls. She wants to divide them evenly between her 5 friends. About how many bouncy balls will each friend get? What is the actual answer? Explain the remainder.

Answer: 123 / 5 = 24 bouncy balls with 3 remaining
Since there is a remainder, Lily can either keep the 3 balls, or have three friends have 25 balls, while the other two have 24 balls.
Round 123 to 150. 150 / 5 = About 30 bouncy balls

12. Bob has 29oz of Oj. How many glasses can he fill if each glass holds 5oz. About how many glasses does he need to buy. How do you know.
He can fill 5 glasses with 4oz left over. He has to buy about 6 glasses

13. Brendan has 148 Baseball cards and would like to split them evenly to each of his 3 brothers. How many cards do each of them get?
First you round up to get 150 cards then divide by three to get about 50 cards each, this is an over estimate.

148 divided by three is 49 R1 so the three of the brothers get 49 cards each and the last one is kept for Brendan Because all the brothers must have the same amount.

14. Danny has a team that picked 254 apples they gave the apples to 4 company's how many many apples did each company get if the apples were divided evenly.

firs 254 rounds to 250 then 250 divided by 4 is 62 R2 this is also an under estimate because I rounded down to 250.

the real answer to this problem is 63 R2 and the two left over gets brought home to Danny to give to him and his kid Charlie.

15. Bryan has 496 stickers and he puts 5 stickers on each page how many pages does he need.

496 divided by 5 equals 99 remainder 1
estimate 500 divided by 5 equals 100

16. I have 451 toys. I have 10 boxes. How many toys go in a box. About how toys go in a box. Show your work.

451/10=45r1 this means that there will be 45 toys in 9 out of ten boxes and the last box will have 46 toys.
450/10=45.

17. I had 105 Johny crayons,i can fit 10 Johny crayons into one box.How many boxes do i need?
estimate:110 /10=11
so i will need 11 boxes and one of those boxes will only have 5 Johny crayons in it

18. At a grocery store, they have 236 cookies that they want to put on 5 shelves. About how many cookies will go on each shelf?

About 48 because 236 rounds to 240 and 240/5=48
The real answer is 47R1 because 236/5=47R1
Since there is a remainder, one shelf will have 48 while the other 4 will have 47 cookies

19. 39 divided by 9 is 4 R3
This means that 3 trays will have 40 cookies and 1 will have 39 cookies
ANNA

20. Jay has 35 shells from the beach. If she splits her shells into 11 boxes, how many shells will go in each box?

About 3 because 35/11=3r2 and 3r2 rounds to 3 so 9 boxes will have 3 shells and 2 boxes will have 4 shells them.

21. Ray has 18 stones. He has 4 boxes how many stones in each box?About how many stones in each box?

About4 because 18 divided by 4 = 4R2 and 4R2 =is closec to 4 so 4 is about the amount that can go in each box.2 boxes will have 5 stones and 2 other boxes will have only 4 stones.

23. Kiera has 156 collectible toys. She has 5 shelves.About how many toys will be on each shelve?

About 31 because 156 divided by 5=31r1. 31r1 rounds to 31 so 4 shelves will have 31 toys and 1 shelf will have 32 toys.

24. Wesley has 116 iphones. He would like to split them into 5 groups. How many iPhones in each group?

116/5=23r.1
100/5=20 iPhones
1 group will have 24 iPhones and the other 5 groups will have 23 iPhones.

25. Megan has 43 earrings. She has 3 boxes. How many earrings can she fit in each box?

About 14 earrings because 43/3=14r1 and 14r1 rounds to 14, so 14 earrings can fit in each box.
1 box will have 15 earrings while the other 2 boxes have 14 earrings in them.

26. Isaiah

Isaiah has 189 Johnny boxes. I want to put them in crates. Each crate holds 5 Johnny boxes. About how many crates will I need? How many crates must I have to ship all the Johnny boxes?
200 divided by 5 = 40
189 divided by 5 = 37 R4
I will need 38 crates.
So 37 crates will have 5 Johnny boxes
and 1 crate will have 4 Johnny boxes

27. I have 494 books and 8 shelves to put them on. How many books can I fit on each shelf? About how many will fit on each shelf?
