Fraction Masters

Write a word problem that requires you to find equivalent fractions to add or subtract. Write out the word problem, show ALL the steps to solve and write the answer with a label.

Tia and Tamara are walking in a walkathon. Combined, they need to walk 10 miles. Tia has already walked 4 and 3/4 miles but Tamara has had a great deal of homework so she has only walked 2 and 1/3 miles. How many miles are left to complete? If they were to complete the same amount of miles, how many miles would each girl still need to walk?

4 3/4 + 2 1/3 =

4 9/12 + 2 4/12= 6 13/12

6 13/12 = 7 and 1/12

10 - 7 1/12 =

9 12/12 - 7 1/12 = 2 11/12

2 and 11/12 miles are left to complete the 10 mile walkathon.

Half of 10 is 5. Tia already walked 4 and 3/4 miles, but Tamara only walked 2 and 1/3 miles.

Tia: 5 - 4 3/4 =
      4 4/4 - 4 3/4 = 1/4
Tia still needs to walk 1/4 of a mile.

Tamara 5 - 2 1/3 =
            4 3/3 - 2 1/3 = 2 2/3
Tamara still needs to walk 2 and 2/3 miles.

  1. sid eat 2/5 of the pizza and his friend ate 1/10 of the pizza. How much have they eaten and how much is left.
    1/10+2/5=?
    2
    -x2=4/10

    1/10 + 4/10 =1/2 or 5/10
    1-5/10 =5/10 or 1/2

they ate 1/2 in all and 1/2 still remaining

  3. Megan has 5/10 of a pound of candy. Her friend has 1/5 of a pound of candy. They ate 3/10 of the combined candy. How much candy is left and how much candy did they eat?

    (5/10 + 1/5) - 3/10=
    (5/10 + 2/10)- 3/10=
    7/10 - 3/10 = 4/10 = 2/5

They ate 2/5 of the candy.

    7/10 - 2/5 =
    7/10 - 4/10 =
    3/10

3/10 of the candy is remaining

  5. Ameyaa went to get some apples. She got 3/8 of a pound of apples. Her friend Summer also got some apples. She got 1/4 of a pound of apples. Megan got the most amount of apples. She got 3/4 of a pound of apples. How much more apples does Megan have than Ameyaa and Summer combined and how many pounds of apples would be left if Summer and Ameyaa combined their apples and ate 3/8 of a pound together?

    3/4-(3/8+1/4)
    3/4-(6/16+4/16)
    3/4-10/16
    12/16-10/16
    2/16
Megan has 2/16 of a pound more than Ameyaa and Summer combined

    (3/8+1/4)-3/8
    (6/16+4/16)-3/8
    10/16-3/8
    10/16-6/16
    4/16

4/16 of a pound of apples would be left if Summer and Ameyaa combined their apples and ate 3/8 of a pound together.😄

  6. Saad has 6 and 3/12 pounds of fruits. His friend has 4 and 1/4 pounds of fruits. They are donating all their fruits to a food drive. How many fruits will they give to the fruit drive combined?

    6 3/12+ 4 1/4=
    6 3/12 + 4 1/4= 6 3/12 + 4 3/12
    6 3/12 + 4 3/12 = 10 and 6/12

Together, Saad and his friend donate 10 and a 6/12 pounds of fruit to the food drive

  7. Bob has 8 and 4/6 pizzas, Fred has 4/9 pizza. How much more pizza does Bob have than Fred.

    8 and 4/6=8 and 12/18
    4/9=8/18
    8 12/18-8/18=4/18
    4/18 = 2/9

  8. Dina has 2 pizzas. On the first one, she ate 5/9 of it. On the second one, she ate 2/6 of it. Which of them did she eat the most of and by how much?

    The common denominator is 18.
    5/9= 10/18 and 2/6=6/18
10/18 is greater than 6/18 so Dina ate the more of the first pizza.

    5/9-2/6
    10/18-6/18
    4/18=2/9

Dina ate 4/18 or 2/9 more of the first pizza then the second pizza.

  9. John has 9/12 pounds of clothes. Anthony has 21/36 pounds of clothes they need to see how much clothes they have altogether to donate to a clothes drive, how much pounds of clothes do they to donate

    9/12+21/36
    least common denominator is 36
    27/36+21/36=27+21=48/36 or 1 and 12/36.

  10. Zoe and Ellen are doing Mrs.Lynches math project.Zoe did 3 and 1/5 of the homework project. Ellen was on a trip with her family over the weekend, so she didn't have time to work on her part. She only did 2 and 2/3 .Together they need to finish at least 12 parts in order to complete this project. How much parts had Ellen and Zoe finish together and how much more parts do they need to finish each one of them?

    3 and 1/5 = 16/5 2 and 2/3 = 8/3 8/3 = 40/15 16/5 =48/15

    48/15 + 40/15 = 88/15 = 5 and 13/15

    12 - 5 and 13/15

    11 15/15 - 5 13/15 = 6 and 2/15 combined Ellen and Zoe did 6 2/15 of their project

together they have to finish 12 parts. So each person has to complete at least 6 parts.

Zoe did 3 1/5 parts to complete here part of the project she needs to do

    5 5/5 - 3 1/5 =2 4/5 left to do

Ellen did 2 2/3 parts to complete her part of the project she needs to do

    5 3/3 - 2 2/3 = 3 1/3 left to do

  11. Bob eat 5/8 of a pizza. Jeff ate 1/4 of the same pizza. How many pieces of the pizza are left?

    8/8-(5/8+1/4)
    1/4x2/2=2/8
    5/8=5/8
    8/8-(5/8+2/8)
    5/8+2/8=7/8
    8/8-7/8=1/8

So 1/8 of the pizza is left.

  13. Jacob has to find 4\5+2\10 in a math problem. How should he answer the problem???

4\5 + 2\10 first you have to find the least common denominator.
the denominator 5 turns into a 10 we had to do 5x2 to get 10 so do the same to the numerator.4x2=8 2\10 stays the same because it has the denominator 10 already so 4\10+2\10=6\10
